If you are writing a term paper, organizing your writing process is imperative. This organizational process begins with the outline.

Not every student understands how to create a useful outline and in fact many students do not understand the reason for having outline.

So why do you need an outline?

There are multiple reasons why an outline is beneficial when writing your paper, but generally speaking, having an outline makes it easy for you to show the relationship of the information you have or the logical order of your information. If you have a research paper, for example, an outline allows you to contract the large amount of information that you have for your subject. Without this organization, you might end up forgetting something that is important to the overall success and flow of your paper. In cases of creative writing, and outline helps you organize the different plot threads that you have and it also enables you to keep track of the different character traits. Any people find it when they are trying to organize a presentation, and outline enables them to speak more effectively and to present their arguments in a much better fashion.

Key benefits to creating outline:

How to create an outline:

  1. The first step in creating outline is to determine the purpose of your paper.
  2. The second step in creating an outline is to determine the audience for whom you are writing. In most cases the audience is just your teacher, but in some cases the audience might also be your classroom full of peers or it might be multiple teachers or even a review committee.
  3. The third step is to develop your thesis. With a thesis, you can then ask yourself what questions need to be answered in the course of your paper. You can write down what information you already know and then list the things that you still need to know.
