A discussion essay is one that presents and discusses the issues that surround a topic. This topic is often one that is prone to debate and open to argument. An effective discussion essay will have an elaborate discussion of different sides in that argument or debate.

Do write a good discussion essay you will need research sources, as well as a text program or pen and paper.

Step 1: Select your essay topic.

You should ensure that the topic you pick is one that really interests you. If you select a topic in which you have a legitimate interest, it will be much easier for you to write on the subject. Since you will have to discuss both sides to this issue, it is important too that you have access to top notch research materials that can give you the information you need.

Step 2: Create an outline.

You can do this with a pen and paper, or with a computer. Either way, you want to outline the discussion you are going to have. Pretend for a moment that you are about to debate a friend and give them both sides to a story. You want to be prepared and have both sides written out ahead of time.

Step 3: Write out your introduction.

This is where you introduce the issues that relate to your topic and give your reader any necessary background information. You should use this area of the paper to explain any keywords or terms that they need to continue reading, but which they may not understand yet. You want to give your reader an overview of how the essay is organized, so that the reader will understand your flow of throughout.

Step 4: Write the body of your paper.

The body is where you present any research sources that you have collected. You should present each of the issues individually and in an impartial manner. You should discuss one side first, and then discuss the opposing side. Progress in order from the weakest argument to the strongest argument. This will allow your reader to follow your line of thinking without becoming distracted.

Step 5: Write out the conclusion of your paper.

The goal in the conclusion is to summarize everything that you presented in the paper. You want the reader to review both sides of the argument, as you just presented them.
